Summer Exhaustion

Next »

July 21st through 27th, 2025

Last week started off summery cool. The comfortable highs in the mid 70s°F eventually gave way to 80s°F. By the weekend, high temperatures and dew points added a thick layer of exhaustion to the many, many activities planned for Saturday. The air quality last week was better. There were a few days with smokey orange sunsets, but the smell of burnt moose was light for the most part. There was a ski show on Monday. It was well attended and pretty good. Wednesday's ski show had to deal with almost 1.5 inches of rain. It was the thunder and lightning that ultimately lead to the canceling of the show. Patches of Eurasian milfoil are loving the weather and Lucerne. A pontoon boat was modified to extract the milfoil picking diver when he ran out of air. Huzzah! Shortly after a successful picking, our diver took himself off line with a logging accident (he dropped a log on his foot). He'll be picking again in a few days. For those that are blessed with a beach, Lake Lucerne has entered the part of summer that requires a good beach raking every day. Some days can be a real olfactory treat. On Saturday, before the heat was turned up to 11, participants gathered for the 3rd Annual Lake Lucerne 5K-ish fun run/walk. At 9:02, about 200 legs were put to the test along the east shore of Lucerne. As the run progressed, spacing between the entrants grew. The event ended at the boat landing and raised about $3,000 for the Crandon Area Rescue Squad. The winner was some college ringer with a time around 16 minutes. Add a minute to that and you'd get our pace per mile. After the race, we found that Kentuck Day in Crandon was in full bloom. It was much more crowded than it's been in years. In one of the more tragic events, the brats ran out at noon. The old cars on display were pretty cool. After visiting a festive graduation/birthday party on Knott Lane, the Lake Lucerne Advancement Association's taco party was a hot and tasty way to end the "Day of Events". They had cold soda there, too. Birds seemed particularly active last week with the Bar's feeder needing refilling every other day. The hummingbirds that had disappeared for a few weeks came back and are drinking a quart of feeder food per day. The sky raccoons were back...and then gone. The longer the gone the better. The squirrels were not gone. The heat opened up many tee times on the NCC course. During the hot times it should be noted that the back nine is more buggy and lost bally, but is also more shaded. Through all the heat, there was always an escape under the crystal clear water of Lucerne (except during the lightningy parts of the week). Don't know why, but I've always found gauche product placement funny. As soon as the giggling ends, I'll try to be more subtle in the future. Last week was like drinking in summer through a firehose. I think that phrase was used in the past around this point, but it's as true now as it was then. Thank goodness for Bactine, Ibuprofen, and energy drinks or we'd never have made it all the way through Saturday without collapse. It looks like we're in for a repeat of last week so now is the time to gas up the boat, apply the sun screen, and warm up the defibrillator.

-Nemo's not planning to drop a log on his foot.
