Last week marked the bottom of the pit of Deep Winter. The sub-zero (°F) highs and a low of -27°F made the start of the week rough. After mid-week, the highs reached into the single digits (°F). By the weekend, highs were well into the 20s°F and Deep Winter was declared over.

The cold at the start of the week was also windy. If you could get the bubble off the wand, it would fly away as it froze. If you did not get it off the wand fast enough, the soapy liquid would quickly freeze into a nice, frosty pane of ice.

The deepest cold of the week brought many turkeys to the Bar's yard.

A handful of corn brought them to the Bar's deck, too.

As the big birds waddled around and sank into the drifts, it was noted that all the little snow falls have added up to a decent base.

The word went out. Soon afterward a small pack of snow machines were cruising around Lucerne.

The bone chilling cold, light snows, and traffic have added a nice ice layer to Potawatomi Trail.

West Shore Drive is more packed snowy than hard icy.

It was windy all week, but especially so on the weekend. On Sunday, gusts would create snow devils and crash them into the north shore.

After slaming into shore stuff (piers, lifts, faces pointed in just the wrong direction), clouds of snow would fall into impressive drifts.

By the end of last week, it was clear that Deep Winter was dead. The third sub-season of winter, Thaw, is upon us. Huzzah! With Thaw will come clearing roads, above zero (°F) lows, and tree tapping. Thaw's first event will be the much anticipated but often delayed Annual Lake Lucerne Bottle Rocket War. Fort construction will start soon and crescendo in rockets (with report!) on Saturday at around 6:30 PM. I've been assured that no turkeys will be harmed, cooked, or eaten during the entire event.<br><br><br>-Nemo's face was pointed in just the wrong direction more than once
