Last week started with seasonal temperatures, some sun, and about 3 inches of snow covering the lake ice.

Lawns and woods had snow cover, too.

Christmas Eve fell a day after the week started. Crandon's Court House Square was well lit for the holidays.

Most of the Christmas cheer in the square was confined to several "Memorial Trees".

They were all decorated very festively.

Traffic in Crandon on Christmas Eve was pretty light.

Then came the frost.

For two days, the mornings were filled with coated trees, grass, and weeds.

Then it got warmer. The yard turkeys didn't seem to mind.

The warm up took all the snow from the top of the lake.

Then it rained. With a frozen watershed, the half inch we got could push the lake level up by more than an inch.

The warm and rain took much of the snow cover from the woods and lawns. There was talk of golf among the men, but the links were still a little too snowy.

On Sunday, just before sunset, the weekend fog and clouds thinned.

The unexpected splash of sky color was one of the best light shows of the week.

This Christmas had a real Eastery feel. The bare lawns and flowing water gave the northwoods a tapping feel, too. Despite the temptation, trees were not tapped and no eggs were colored. Some chocolate was consumed, but it was not shaped in any way like a bunny. We did not get an ice thickness check last week, but I can't imagine it being much thicker than the 5 inches we measured the week before. We need more snow or this year's snowmobile season is gonna be disappointing and the <a href='/WeeklySummaryPages/2007/0121/2007brwN.html' class ='defaultlink2' target='_blank'>bottle rocket war forts will be made of ice</a>.<br><br><br>-Nemo will not tap until March and not mow until May.
