The Start of Winter

November 18th through 24th, 2024

Lake Lucerne
Last week started off seasonably warm. That didn't last long. Clouds came in, wind picked up, and a little snow fell. It looks like we might get a white thanksgiving.

When the clouds did not smother the night, Lucerne was well lit by a waning moon.
Lake Lucerne
When the seasonably warm was replaced by cold, the lake steamed.
Lake Lucerne
Before the snow it rained. All day. The lake finished up with over a half an inch.
Lake Lucerne
The rain ended in a little snow.
Lake Lucerne
The snow lasted longer than expected. The warmness of the ground kept the accumulation down to around an inch.
Lake Lucerne
As the week progressed, it all melted. The yard puddles are back.

Knott Lane is snow free, but if the temperatures don't stay above freezeing before the soak leaves the lane, it'll be an icy base for winter.
Lake Lucerne
At the end of the week we were reminded of the pending Knott Lane Board Meeting and Pool Party. On the way to the extreme southwestern corner of the lake is the Mall of America. We dropped in to see it. It's big.

In the lumpier parts of the path, there's snow.
Lake Lucerne
It seems suitable for skiing.

The bumpy parts of the trail never fail to impress.

Winter is almost upon us. If you haven't entered the Annual Ice-In Contest, time is running out. It looked like the lake might push ice-in into next year like last year. Now it looks like an early December ice-in is inevitable. For the record, that would be two ice-ins for 2024.
