Canceled Ski Show, Deeper Lake

June 3rd through 9th, 2024

Last week started out green and cooler with a low ceiling over the lake. Lucerne's temperature hovered in the mid 60s°F. That, and on and off rain, kept many off the lake.

Trillium season is over. If you missed it, they'll be back in around 48 weeks.

The cooler water and the inclementness of the weather did not keep everyone from the water. Some of the swimmers were pretty new, so maybe they didn't know any better.

Hummingbirds are getting more numerous on the north end of the lake. They're currently going through a quart of sugar water every two days.

Wednesday's ski show at Waters Edge, the first of the year, looked to be lightly attended. Then the weather moved in and the show was canceled.

The next show should have more skiing, less rain and wind.

The rain during the ski show was a synopsis for the weather all week. It'd be sunny and warm one minute, then ominous clouds would roll in and dump weather upon our piers and heads.

There were a few torrential moments, but slower, brief showers were more the norm. By Sunday, the lake was 1.1 inches deeper.

There were gaps in the weather mostly large enough to squeak in 9 holes. Mostly.

Lake Schaefer was back before mid-week! It was gone by the weekend.

Before the week ended, there were a few yards of concrete to be poured.

Because of the location, the concrete had to be tracked to the forms a half a yard at a time.

It went pretty well.

There were 2 multi-yard slabs and 2 smaller projects to be filled.

The tasks were completed without injury and, thanks to ibuprofen, without much post pour pain.

The truck ran out of concrete before the last small project was started. Many of the men did not cry about this. Well, none actually.

After the pour, clouds started to roll in. A cloud up just before the sun goes down usually preceeds a good, colorful sunset.

The lake should be at the high water mark for the year soon. Rarely does the lake level go up after June. If we continue to have weeks as wet as the last, this summer could be an exception. I don't think we'll see a record water level set for Lucerne this year. That'd require the lake to get a foot deeper. All the rain has lawns growing at an alarming rate. Mowings have to be scheduled between storms and after the lawn puddles have receded to levels that would not disappear lawn tractors. Mosquitoes are as bad as ever. This is June, so that's to be expected. Certainly not cherished or looked upon with any feelings of sentimental longing or wistful affection, but expected.
