Seasonably Frosty

October 9th through 15th, 2023

Last week continued the season's steady march to ice-in. The lake got a little cooler, shadows got a little bit longer, and the trees got a little more leafless. Unlike the unfortunate events of Octobers past, there's been no snow yet, so we've got that going for us, which is nice. Previous frosts this year have been patchy. That ended with last Thursday's particulaly cold morning when a uniform layer of ice crystals covered decks, weeds, and lawns. The lake was steaming on more than one morning. By the weekend, the water temperature was at 55°F. In between last week's rain and drizzle (no snow, huzzah!), the wind vanished, the sun came out, and the lake became a sheet of glass. We may have put away the ski boat too early. Mixed in with the glassy and sunny days were several overcast ones that included layers of cool damp that kept mowers off lawns and golfers off the course. And rain. We got 3/4 of an inch during an all day wet event on Friday that trailed into Saturday. Trees have been shedding leaves at an increasing pace. There's more gray in the hills. But we still have some color out there. The bar's squirrels are getting more shiny and hairless as we get closer to ice-in. They're noticeably slower and less tetchy, too. With weather either coming in or going out in the evenings, some sunsets were spectacular. In addition to increasingly leafless trees and a shiny squirrel, a few chickens and a duck are crossing the road and de-bugging the bar's lawn. In addition to pest control, the clucking waddlers can can be hysterically funny. Before the weekend, for those that agreed to a nominal fee, the pontoon crane guy pulled the last boat lifts from the lake. There still is some golf left on local courses and some tennis to be had in Crandon, but the skiing season on Lucerne is pretty much over. We'll be marking the "skiing is done" event with the carving of pumpkins in a few weeks. Nature will mark the event a short time later with ice-in.

-Nemo has put away the waterskis and is looking for a warm hat.
