Last week started off smoky. The 160 megatons of carbon emissions (and counting!) from the poor forest management of our neighbor to the north seemed to settle over the lake, bringing visibility down to "thick fog" with an accompanying smell of burnt moose. In the short term, we needed a wind from the west. In the long term, someone needs to teach Canadians the word firebreak.

By Tuesday, the wind shifted and the air cleared enough to see Lake Metonga when peeking over the hill to the west.

The lake got really flat, too.

The smoke was back on Wednesday. The crowd for the evening ski show at Waters Edge was light.

The show was good.

The smoke was mostly gone for Sunday's special show. The crowd was the largest one of the year.

Flatter water and a talented team made for some impressive acts.

After some recall work on the Optima in Wausau, we took a wrong turn and ended up a little south of the lake at some sort of music festival.

We've been here before. Summerfest used to be an 11 day thing that was tasty, hot, and crowded. They have since switched to a 3 weekend format and it's not so crowded anymore.

The festiveness of music and deep fried food was augmented by a fist bump from a living statue.

On Saturday at noon in Crandon, one of the longest parades ever marched down Lake Avenue.

The ski team's float was our favorite.

On Sunday, Lake Lucerne had its own parade.

It started at Waters Edge and headed north. It made it to the north end, turned south, and moved down the east side of the lake.

Just when we thought it was over, another segment of parade would float up from the south and circle the north end of Lucerne.

The last bit of parade made its pass in front of the bar just before Sunday's ski show.

Acorns are currently plentiful and really, really tiny.

When asked to comment on the acorn's current size, the bar's resident evil responded by giving us the stink eye, munching on some bird feed, and kicking a duckling.

It got hot again by the weekend. It was a great time to throw overheated, tired, and fried food filled bodies into the lake.

The lake temperature is back up to 72°F.

After the smoke cleared and the heat returned, it was noted that the lake is lower for June. Four and a half inches lower. It could be a good time to make sure you have at least 9 inches of play in your boat lift if you are planning to keep the craft in through Labor Day. After being sure the boat will come off the lift until fall, the best way to spend the summer, in our opinion, is to be on or under Lucerne for the duration.<br><br><br>-Nemo is taking his lunch on the raft.
