Cold, then Colder

November 14th through 20th, 2022

Last week started off on a cold note. It ended on an even colder crescendo. There was also snow, wind, and ice, but mostly really memorable cold. Near the middle of last week, Lake Wabikon iced over. Usually Lake Lucerne follows suit about a week or two later, but for every steadfast rule in the northwoods there will be exceptions. On the day before Wabikon iced-in, we checked Lucerne's progress. Ice sheets behind the islands have yet to form. Later in the week, a little ice started to creep from the corner of the north end. A time lapse camera was set up to record ice-in on Lucerne. I've got the footage of the color peaking last October and will post it on the front page this week. The snow started on Monday evening. It snowed on and off for the remainder of the week. By Wednesday, there was a fresh 3.5 inches on the bar's deck. The snow that came after mid-week was light and accumulated to less than a half an inch. Sometime during last week, word went out to all the lawn care people from the push mower types to the tractored class: Lawn mowing season is over. The condition of Knott Lane is moving toward Winter (treacherous, hazardous, bruise inducing). The cold and snow has given the bar its Winter teeth early this year. The real cold came during the weekend. Even the drones complained about the 3°F morning low on Sunday. The lake was giving up its remaining heat all weekend. On Sunday, a thick coating of ice formed on many surfaces being splashed by the waves on the north end of the lake. Several eagles were seen gliding above the lake all week. If he eats any more, he's going to have a hell of a time getting out through the "squirrel proof" cage. It was cold last week. Not the unspeakably cold of January, but close. Many, including us, were surprised that Lake Lucerne has not started to grow at least some sheets of ice. It was noted that ice sheets seldomly form when the water is rough as it was much of the week, but it did calm down on Sunday and still no noteworthy ice. There's plenty of snow and ice on the roads around the lake. Walking around the north end has become a perilous act of slipitude even for the most careful and booted. We might get a little warmer before we won't, but it is becoming increasing likely that the first Horseman of the Snowpocalypse is upon us.

-Nemo quickly landed before a cold induced under-volt forced the issue.
