Warm, Then Not

Rarely does the weather line up exactly with a solstice or equinox. Winter has been known to avalanche into Spring. Summer occasionally swims its way into October. Not this year. As the Autumnal equinox passed last week, so did Summer. In a rare celestial and meteorological alignment, swimming and tanning switched to shivering and the wearing of hats in the span of a few hours. Before the official arrival of Fall, the few (2) warm days we enjoyed ended with nice sunsets and some flat water. The water was more lumpy during the afternoons of the toasty times. The temperature of the lake water was less toasty. Before the air turned colder, the swimmers sported the blue skin that comes from a 68°F Lucerne. For what ever reason, a flock of blue jays was raucous-ing up the north end of the lake before midweek. Before the cold entered the northwoods, there was no chance of morning frost on the spiderwebs. Afterwards, we had a few close calls, but no first frost yet. The bar's deck hit peak sunflower last week. The trees aren't close to peak yet. The trees on the hill behind the east shore are particularly not at peak color. In a few spots after the cold, a couple trees splashed out color in a not very subtle attempt at foreshadowing. The dredging and grading of Upper and Lower Walerko, the two lakes along the top edge of West Shore Drive, is complete. New grass seed was put down making the future of the two ponds more lawn like. The greens at Nicolet got their Fall aeration which temporarily made them faster and more curse-y. In Crandon., the nets are still up at Cardinal Park making tennis still a thing for another week. After the cold, all the lakes and low areas along Hwy 8 steamed in the morning chill as they surrendered their heat to the frigid air. There were two rain events last week. One sandwiched between the warm and the cold mid-week and the other on the weekend. Neither raised the lake level much. The storms on the weekend had a little pea sized hail with them. All the weekend rain made this year's Art in the Square a damp, yet still fun festival. Late in the day on Sunday the rain moved out and more cold rolled in. There was also a little refraction. It looks like the wet weekend kept many boats from being pulled for the year. Next weekend should be a busy one at the landing. It was not a good week for furry little a-holes. Earlier in the week, a racoon was terminally dented on Potawatomi Trail. A short time later, a squirrel was squashed. Due to a past summary page that included <a href='/WeeklySummaryPages/2014/0210/StupidGroundhogN.html' class ='defaultlink2' target='_blank'>The List</a>, I've been advised by counsel to make no further comments. Well...that was fun. And Wet. As last week ended, it left behind the cool dampness that precedes the first frost and peak color. We are currently 2 weeks into taking a time lapse movie of the northeastern hill across from Knott Lane (thanks for the use of the special camera aLf!). We'll be posting it right after the hill turns gray (2-3 weeks). Now is the best time to heal up, plan for pumpkin carving, and regret not pulling the boat out earlier.<br><br><br>-Nemo lawyered up before refilling the bird feeder.
