Cooler Summer

July 25th through 31st, 2022

Lake Lucerne
Last week was dry and a little cooler. Daily highs hit the 70s°F until the weekend and more than a few morning lows dripped well into the 40s°F. We would like to see this trend in temperatures stopped or reversed, specifically those morning lows. If not, we'll all be in coats and hats before Labor Day.

The cold mornings have taken a toll on the lake temperature. Thanks to some 80s°F on the weekend, it's holding above 72°F. Cool, but still quite swim-able.

The water clarity is still as good as ever with visibility on sunny days reaching out past 20 feet.
Lake Lucerne
The lack of rain is dropping the lake level and beaches are starting to be a thing again on the north end of Lucerne.

Sunsets have been, for the most part, clear and cool. They have proven to be a great time to rest sore muscles and to tan the bottoms of feet and sandals.

The last Monday ski show of the year was well attended and not close to being rained out.

Shows on Wednesdays will continue for the first 3 weeks in August and crescendo with Footstock 2022, the largest barefoot water skiing event in the world (really!), held on August 20th and 21st.

This guy startled me by swooping out of a basswood tree not more than 5 feet above my head on West Shore Drive.

These guys are far more common this year and don't startle many, if any.

It's hard to tell exactly when peak picking of raspberries is, but it's close to now.

During the ski show on Wednesday, a small silver ring was tragically dropped off the show dock. With the failure of the first recovery attempt of a lost item earlier in the month, we wanted to recover this bit of precious to regain our confidence.

After putting on masks and fins, we dove down. Even with the lake level in full retreat, it's deeper under the show dock than you might think.

Mrs Nemo eventually found it on the sandy bottom under about 10 feet of water .

After finding it, recovery was far simpler than a trip to Mordor

Huzzah! Ring and owner will be rejoined either during Monday's ski practice or Wednesday's ski show.

On the warmer weekend, a Summer Olympics of a sort was held in the northeastern corner of the lake. Events included a high jump into the lake, some sort of a two person board race, and other feats of strength. The medal awarding and closing ceremony had music and was well attended.

After posting this summary, we'll be checking the level of the lake. My guess is that it'll be down another 4 inches or so since July 1st. If you can get your boat off the lift, you might want to drag that lift a bit deeper after the next ski run. If you can't, prayer or rain dances might help. There's some rain forecast for the next week, but what we really need is a +3 incher, preferably at night. In spite of the cooler mornings and the falling lake temperature and level, Summer '22 continues to be event filled and non-stop.

-Nemo will pick and eat a few before the next ski show.
