Full On Summer

July 18th through 24th, 2022

Last week had a little rain, a lot of sun, and air temperatures that rarely failed to soar into the 80s°F. Diving, skiing, swimming, tennis, golf, and scratching of bug bites kept many from focusing on important things like professional tanning or exhaustion comas, but that's part of the beauty of the northwoods during Summer. Much to do, not enough time or energy to do it. There was a little rain. Very little. Not nearly enough to slow the falling lake level. Reports are filtering in of piers that need extending, boats being stuck on lifts, and a few calling for the scalps of those that expanded the outflow of Swamp Creek. We need more rain. The first ski show of the week was canceled due to a little rain and a lot of thunder. The second show went on as scheduled and was great. The ski show crowds are getting lesser, but what they may lack in numbers they make up with enthusiasm. So far this summer, Mrs Nemo and I have each chipped one into the bucket. More than 2 have landed in the lake. We've trained small bass to guard the errant golf balls until they can be safely retrieved. The big crappies that were spotted on the cribs didn't guard much of anything. The dinner plate sized panfish are tasty but simply untrainable. The lake temperature at the north end hit 78°F by midweek. A fine diving temperature for missed shots. I'm pretty sure that Mrs Nemo collected more than anyone. Our fingers were growing pruney by the time we got them all. The lake was angry on at least one day last week. For more than one day it was "great for footing" flat. For whatever reason, the lake disturbingly lost 1°F on the weekend. Despite the lack of any heavy rain, the burdock crop is thriving. There's a few thistle plants that are more than thriving. Some are large enough to house a small group of grumpy gnomes. Their flowers seem to be the bees' choice for frenzied feeding. Last Thursday, the first official bar night of the season was held. Despite the "school night" nature of the timing, it was well attended. The waning moon is making for some dark nights. If you find yourself outdoors on a clear night next week, the latest starlink constellation is crossing the sky at around 10 PM. It looks like a long patch of lights and crosses from South to North in about 4 minutes. There were some clouds, but no rain on Saturday's Kentuck Day celebration in Crandon. Described by many as a must-see event in Crandon, Kentuck Day had a car show, food, and lots of stuff for sale. Last week was filled with Summer. Hand and hand with the heat and sun, were hundreds of golf ball chips, many swimming and diving events, boating, fishing, campfires, a starlink viewing, and a wasp sting. Stupid wasp. One more wasp wound and they're on "The List". With a solid 6 weeks of summer to enjoy not counting any summer bonus periods, pacing has taken on a special significance. In addition to the Ibuprofen and energy drinks (and Benadryl if you have any close encounters of the waspy kind), be sure to kick back and relax for at least 5 minutes a day. Also, be careful when filling the hummingbird feeders, those wasps are sneaky and annoying.

-Nemo avoids grumpy gnomes and exhaustion comas with varying degrees of success.
