Deep Winter VI: Officially Extending January

Next »

January 38th through 44th, 2022

It's a myth that Julius and Augustus Caesar took days from February to pad their eponymous months. It's fact that in 2022, January took weeks from February to bloat its empire of frost. Six weeks of Deep Winter is two unwelcome weeks longer than usual. Some would argue that it's six weeks too long. Still others are too cold to argue and spend their time clutching hot beverages while wrapped in blankets and praying that the propane holds out until we get to a warmer month; we're thinking the "padded" ones (July or August). Despite the ugly cold, there is still fun to be had. This is the northwoods after all. We've got a few more ideas to express cold as art. If Deep Winter continues into next week (blech), we'll try to give them form. There was a "warm" bump in last week. With its retreat came a few inches of snow. Then the wind made a dismissible under 4 inches into really respectable drifts. The North end of West Shore Drive got drifted up real good. Lake Lucerne Drive suffered less drifting, but is still uber-icy. The snow was removed, the ice covering remained on most roads. We're thinking that Knott Lane should be clear by June. Mid June for sure. The wild turkeys seem to be taking this extended January in stride as they comb the area under the bar's feeder for fallen seeds. The cold has turned the squirrels into carnivores. No reports of a big red or gray taking a head of cattle or a bear, but it's just a matter of time. The drifting on the lake caused by the bottle rocket war forts is also impressive. Under those forts and drifts there's almost 18 inches of very clear, hard ice. The cold has been kind to the forts. Even the ice votive candle holder that tops the southern rampart has held up well. Sunsets have been engaging yet ominous. Engaging in the way the thinning clouds play with the setting sun's light. Ominous in that it ensures yet another sub-zero morning. The Calendar of Romulus was a 10-month calendar. The year started in March and ended in December. January and February didn’t exist. While Romulus's measure of time didn't quite pan out, his heart was in the right place. Maple tapping is going to be late. Ice-out on Lucerne will be later. Summer, for those that endured this extended January, will be all the sweeter. We've never had an ice-out later than May 9th, but this could be the year.

-Nemo hopes to give up shivering for lent.
