Deep Winter II: The Warmening

January 10th through 16th, 2022

Lake Lucerne
Last week started off cold, then warmed to just below freezing, then back to cold. During Deep Winter, it's not unusual to have a warmish bump bracketed by walls of cold. Typically that second round of cold feels a little more chilly and a lot more icy.
Lake Lucerne
During the bump, air on the ground stayed several degrees below freezing, but the air above that must have been warmer. The drizzle that fell froze instantly as it hit roofs, roads, and treetops, making for a slight icing event and an exciting time to drive on any untreated lane.

The condition of Knott Lane is currently not so good.

The small load of ice on the bent tree in front of the Bar has kept it crooked for the rest of the week.

On closer inspection it seems that the pine's stem is a bit more damaged than originally thought.

The squirrels are active and eating their weight in bird food every day.
Lake Lucerne
The Deep Winter Squirrel Ball moratorium and their acrobatic antics have seasoned squirrel ballers developing a collection of twitches and tics.
Lake Lucerne
The wild turkeys also are very active.
Lake Lucerne
Judging from the way they dance around the Bar's deck, they are getting less tetchy and skittish.

On Sunday a hole was drilled in the lake ice to check its thickness.
Lake Lucerne
There's just under 11 inches of "hard water" covering Lucerne.
Lake Lucerne
The top inch or so is the soft, airy frozen snow variety. After that, the ice is crystal clear and as hard as diamond.

We have ice. We have snow. We have over 3000 rockets. And now we have a conflict between the 31st Annual Lake Lucerne Bottle Rocket War and a Packer playoff game. We have sent them calls and emails asking them to reschedule Lambeau's Saturday event, but the League did not respond to any of our pleas. As a result, we have been forced to reschedule Lucerne's main January event. The 31st Annual Lake Lucerne Bottle Rocket War has been moved to Saturday, January 29th at 6:30PM. My guess is that we'll still have plenty of ice and snow.
