Coldpocalypse! (a.k.a. January)

Next »

December 27th, 2021 through January 2nd, 2022

The highs during much of last week were in the 20s°F. And then they weren't. The weekend shivered with highs barely getting out of the single digits and the lows were even more ugly. The Coldpocalypse is upon us! Watch for more noggins to become behatted, the price of hot chocolate skyrocket, and the most requested soup to become "anything, as long as it's hot". If you're planing a visit to the lake, bring a hat. Usually squirrels go dormant during a Coldpocalypse, but so far the little buggers are continuing to scamper about and raid bird feeders. The birds around these parts seem to have given up on seeds and have instead embraced the tallowy taste of venison. Bambi will not be amused. The wild turkeys still seem to be loving any seeds that the fuzzies spill onto the ground. After seeds, the turkeys show off impressive feats of balance. It's like a late November Cirque du Soleil show, but with more skittish performers that can sort of fly. And if you are not pleased with the show, there's always cranberries. Road conditions remain...interesting. The condition of Knott Lane is narrowing and even more treacherous. We are becoming more concerned about the bent pine on the bar's lawn. It's still green and all, but does not seem to be springing back. It's cold outside. Such words have been expressed in the past, but it's cold enough out to reiterate. Emphatically reiterate. We didn't get an ice thickness check last week, but judging from the snowmobile traffic, we'd say it's pretty thick. Or at least thick enough. We did acquire ordnance for the upcoming Annual Lake Lucerne Bottle Rocket War. I would expect the 3000+ rockets to be expended in less than half an hour if we can keep the war time temperature above the boiling point of propane (-43.6°F). If you can't attend the event, we'll get the links up to watch a live view (better than the webcam with sound and all the trimmings) in a week or so.

-Nemo, behatted and giving squirrels a pass during extreme cold.
