The One With All The Frost

Next »

October 18th through 24th, 2021

There were several interesting events last week, but one of the most noteworthy was the temperature. The week started off great with sun, highs near 70°F and lows on the good side of freezing. Then that changed. On Wednesday, we got the first frost of the year. On the weekend, we enjoyed the first hard freeze. On cold mornings, the lake gave up its heat in wisps of steam. The steam really piled up on the South end of Lucerne. Before the great steaming, the lake temperature dropped below 60°F. By the week's end, Lake Lucerne was closer to 50°F. The leaves that covered the hills just a few weeks ago are mostly on the ground. The trees are ready for Winter. With the weather turning colder and wetter (over a half an inch (of rain, thank goodness)), we took a short road trip to the hills just West of Schaefers IGA. A small amphitheater in front of the monument was a pleasant surprise. The carving itself was totally amazeballs. The snow on the edges was troubling in a foreshadowy kind of way. Tenacious, adjective, tending to keep a firm hold of something; clinging or adhering closely. During the weekend, the lake was very calm and cool. And Ottery! On the North end of the lake, a river otter was seen playing on a raft with a big bluegill. In addition to being a fine fisherman, It turned out to be a pretty good diver, too. The River Otter Show can be seen on the knottlane webcam on random mornings from now until ice-in. The squirrels were no match for this big boy. A large, fearless pileated kept the bar's feeder fuzzy free and low on suet during the weekend. We were several weeks past due for the first frost of the year. Early in the week, the golf course was in great shape and well populated. It closed by the end of the week. A hard freeze (23°F) will do that. We saw a few fishermen, but nobody skied or swam, 50°F water will do that. With the leaves and temperatures down and November just an otter dive away, it's time to get the code monkeys busy getting the Annual Knottlane Ice-In contest posted. Start thinking of your date and watch for the contest in the next week or so.

-Nemo fan of tenacious trees, river otters, and giant heads. Snow, not so much.
