The One With The Arty Square

September 13th through 19th, 2021

Lake Lucerne
It felt warmer than reported last week. The highs were around 70°F (except for Sunday's 82°F, Huzzah!) and the lows were around 50°F. There was some wind, rain, sun, and art. Perhaps it was the mixture of weather and the lack of a frost that made it seem warmer than it was, but at this point in the year, even faux warmth is most welcome.
Lake Lucerne
The air might have felt warm, the lake not so much. Lake Lucerne has entered its Autumnal platitude period of being described as "crystal clear and ice cold".
Lake Lucerne
Don't know if it was the warmer feeling weather or it was just that time of year, but there was quite the gathering of eagles above the North end of the lake.
Lake Lucerne
Early in the week, as the big birds floated on the warm air, clouds began to cover the sun.
Lake Lucerne
The lake was going to get some weather.
Lake Lucerne
About a half an inch later, it was all over.
Lake Lucerne
As the rain moved on, it left behind a higher lake level, a few lawn puddles, and a nice sunset.
Lake Lucerne
The local frog population seemed unimpressed, well fed. If the bugs continue to enjoy the non-frosts, the frogs should remain fat and happy.
Lake Lucerne
The trees didn't have much color yet.
Lake Lucerne
But there are always some that buck the trend.
Lake Lucerne
Most are holding on to their late Summer green though.
Lake Lucerne
Sunflowers are in peak yellow around the bar except for a few that can accurately be described as post peak.
Lake Lucerne
Ornamental grasses have adopted their late Summer gold.
Lake Lucerne
And the burdock has gone from soft green to scratchy brown.
Lake Lucerne
After the storms, strong winds from the South produced a bumper crop of waves on the North end.
Lake Lucerne
The eagles hovered on the wind about 50 feet above the waves only dropping down to get a fishy lunch.
Lake Lucerne
To continue the Summer theme, late in the week we traveled past Wabeno to a local music festival.
Lake Lucerne
It was a little more Summery than you'd expect (or want) for mid-September.
Lake Lucerne
The crowds were light, the music was loud, and the food was pretty good.
Lake Lucerne
On Saturday, Art in the Square was back in Crandon
Lake Lucerne
The crowds were light, the music was not so loud, and the food was pretty good. It also had a vague feeling of deja vu all over again
Lake Lucerne
With the lake temperature below 70°F and the surface...no wait. Wrong lake.
Lake Lucerne
With the lake temperature below 70°F and the surface rough, the time seems to have come to pull boats and lifts from the water. Many agreed as evidenced by the stream of various trailered water craft parading from the boat landing late on the weekend. We are still a week or two from peak color. Historically we'd expect a few more ski runs and maybe a dive or two, but the lake will be far less crowded. If you're planning on coming up to see the color in the trees, watch for deer. This year, they'e almost as thick as the bugs and many times more denty.
