The One With the County Fair

September 6th through 12th, 2021

Last week could be best described as seasonal. High temperatures were just above or below 70°F, there was some wind, and the lake temperature fell to 68°F. This made late Summer tasks involving the lake all the more refreshing. There was also a seasonal amount of rain. Enough to slow, but not halt the falling lake level. The cooler nights, mostly in the mid 40s°F, have helped put a little color in some trees. Overall though, most of the trees are holding on to their late Summer green. Yellow was only seen in some of the weeds on the shoulder of roads. The yellow flowers seem to be like catnip for bees. Some sunsets have been breathtaking, but would have been better if viewed while skiing. The sunsets are progressing farther South. If you are tall enough, you can see it reflected in Lake Metonga from the North end of Lucerne. Judging from the number of fishermen, both boated and beaked, the fishing is good on Lake Lucerne. On Saturday, it was deemed time for the Crandon Water Shows show dock to leave the water. The 4 person dock extraction squad braved the 68°F water and more than a few giant boat waves as they set about removing the 24 sections and their supports that make up the rickety, but solid enough, structure. It took almost 2 hours. Also, reports of crippling injuries and deaths were down from last year. Huzzah! Surviving members of The Dock Extraction Squad will be renamed The Dock Installation Squad and called back into action next June. Starting last Friday and going through Sunday, there was the Forest County Fair. The games, rides, and general northwoods atmosphere make this event a September high point. There were also many tasty and healthy snacks. Some foods were less nutritionally dense, more deep fried than others. We did not do any of the many rides. We especially did not do the Vominator. While checking out the lights, it was noted that the northwoods have not yet had a frost. The bugs have not been that bad this year, so we don't know of anyone that is looking forward to the first frost. The lake's temperature is getting close to the point where only the tragically ignorant, truly dedicated or the certifiably insane are skiing. The tragically ignorant produce the best screams when dipped into the un-warm waters. The first frost is not far away and with that comes the time to start thinking about your ice-in date and complaining about the price of lift tickets at Ski Brule.

Nemo needs to drop 20 pounds and not fill up on fair delicacies before attempting the Vominator.
