The One That Ended in Rain

Last week started off with a hazy warmth. The haze would go away. The warmth would stick around. The ski show on Wednesday was spectacular. There's only two more left in 2021 and then <a href='https://www.facebook.com/FootstockUSA' class ='defaultlink2' target='_blank'>Footstock</a> (August 21st and 22nd just outside of Crandon on Lake Peshtigo). Footstock is one of those portents that the end of Summer is nigh. Another sign of the warmth's mortality is the maturing of the acorns. Judging from these guys, we've still got a few weeks of comfortable swimming left. I've never seen so many hummingbirds in the northeastern corner of the lake. They're draining about a quart of sugar water a day from a pair of feeders. The seed feeder takes two or three days to empty depending mostly on the appetites of those strange fuzzy birds. During much of last week, eagles were spotted hunting up the North end. On Saturday the LLAA had their annual Lake Lucerne Fun Day. It was pretty crowded and there was much fun. About half way through, there was also some rain. For much of the weekend, the rain decorated the pines, soaked the ground, and raised the lake level. By the time it ended, the lake was 2 inches deeper and the ground was 2 inches wetter.. Nobody mowed. During the month of July the <a href='/LakeLevel/LL2.html' class ='defaultlink2' target='_blank'>lake level</a> fell about 3 inches. So far August seems to be trying to bring it back to the June level and beyond. Disturbingly, Lake Lucerne's temperature fell to 73°F. We were hoping it would hold at 75°F or better going into Labor Day. There's some warmer weather in the forecast. Maybe we can get it back to the not-needing-10-minutes-to-get-used-to-it levels. That, or I predict that wet and dry suits will be a trending thing for the in, on, and under the lake set.<br><br><br>-Nemo, charter member of the in, on, and under the lake set.
