Return of the Normal

June 14th through 20th, 2021

Lake Lucerne
Last week held a few days that touched the 80s°F, but most were in the 70s°F. Sunrise had a few October-esque low temperatures (40s°F!) that saw the lake misting away its heat. Aside from the lake being warm enough to steam on cool mornings, this is pretty much what we've come to expect of June.

The weather is still warm enough to support a bumper crop of frog on the North end of the lake. They get pretty raucous at night. It's to the point that you can't hear the packs of ATVs, overly loud music, or low passing jets over the croaking cacophony.

The birds also seem not to mind the more mild temperatures. The cool makes 'em more hungry. It also makes 'em furrier than birds normally are.
Lake Lucerne
Plants and bugs are also thriving in the new June cool.
Lake Lucerne
Golf courses are also holding onto their green during the return of normal June.

There has also apparently been enough rain to keep the water hazards full of liquid peril.

The weekly ski show is getting stronger, too.

We are looking forward to the third show of the season this week on Wednesday, June 23rd at 6:30 PM (with the pre-show starting around 6:00 PM).

West Shore Drive got one lump smoother last Thursday.
Lake Lucerne
It'll still be a little lumpy during the healing process, but the road no longer has that bicycle launching hump that in the past few years has come to define the North end of Lucerne.

If you haven't been up since last Summer, there's one less pizza place up here. Last December 18th the Golden Eagle Restaurant/bar in Townsend burned. We've heard they had great food, but have not heard whether they will rebuild and make pizza again.

The clearing sky before the cold nights have made for some good sunsets.

It's a little depressing every time we pass through Townsend, but there's still Johnnies on Wabikon or Pizza Haven in Rhinelander to fill all our pepperoni pie needs. In a normal June, the cooler weather that flowed into last week could also be a little dispiriting, but was instead welcomed by many as a breath catching respite. By the end of last week, the lake was a little colder (71°F) and a little lower. The rains of Sunday (half an inch total) will push it up a little higher, but it looks like it will be down a few inches by the end of June. With the rain over and the temperatures to recover by mid-week, it looks like we'll get to do it all over again (ski, swim, dive, golf, eat pizza, etc.) until we run out of energy drinks, Ibuprofen, or just drop over.
