Deep Winter 2

January 25th through 31st, 2021

Last week, Lake Lucerne got a few inches of snow and a pallet of cold. As Deep Winter trudges on, we take solace that this year's Deep Winter does not have the depth of snow or cold as do most. A few inches of snow can effectively be ignored. A -5°F morning will take more than a round trip to the mailbox to freeze a few fingers off. Come on January, is that all you got? If Deep Winter continues to show a shockingly disrespectful lack of game, we'll be tapping trees in a week or two. The lake still has one bottle rocket war fort. The second fort, the Northern one, was remodeled into an ice rink. The mighty prow of the remaining fort was damaged, but the rampart remains mostly intact and still suitable for light battles and kiddie parties. The "Orb of Justice" remains least damaged of all. There has been no small amount of speculation on how this orb got its name. After contacting ICANN, it turns out that there were only 3 remaining orb domain names left, the "Orb of Justice", the "Orb of Incontinence", and the "Orb of Squirrel". The incontinence one was a non-starter and given my history with squirrels, the Justice one was the only real choice. There were some cloudy days, but sunlight was not in short supply during much of the week. The lake was bathed in moonlight for many of the nights, too. All that light is producing a fine crop of icicles. Knott Lane remains ice covered. On more than one morning there was a fresh blanket of snow on top of that ice. The local flock of wild turkeys seem to prefer their driveways plowed and well corned. With January in the rear-view mirror and a plowed, albeit ice covered, February ahead, it may be time to put a pin in Deep Winter and embrace the final sub-season of the colder Solstice: Thaw. And with the celebration of Thaw comes thoughts of the Summer Schedule! Through a quirk in the calendar and some careless editing, The 2021 Summer Schedule starts on February 21st with points earned on the 19th and 20th being rolled into the 21st due to the "Weekend Rule". So with less than 3 weeks to go, it might be a good time to finalize those Summer to-do lists, check on the tanning butter supplies, and get some more ibuprofen.

-Nemo will continue to taunt Deep Winter well into Fall.
