A Taste of Winter

It was cold last week. While below average temperatures have become the norm this October, the cold of last week stepped it up a notch. Or would that be down a notch? Last Tuesday's 11°F morning tied the record low for that date. Nobody skied.

A few loons have been fishing up the North end of the lake. In addition to ridding the lake of fish, they've been acting as an audio eagle alarm.

Later in the week, strong winds from the South created some of the roughest water on the North end of the lake this year. Lake Lucerne has dropped an inch this October, but the lake is still high and the North shoreline was punished by the big breakers.

And all that water is not warm. Another week of cold and we'll see fingers of ice start to stretch out from the edges.

The cold and snow forced a delay in the final mowing of the year.

The wonderful weather made it a good time to begin loading coin-ops into the bar's new video pit. The howling of the wind in the hemlocks and the calls of the loons will soon be augmented by the pitter-patter of tiny 16 bit feet.

October ended with a big, bright, blue moon.

Pumpkin carving this year had less drinking, fewer pumpkins, but more moon light.

Possibly confused by the Winter weather, Mrs Nemo's Christmas Cactus bloomed about 7 weeks early.

A Lake Lucerne ice-in around Thanksgiving is a rare and un-wonderful thing. Lake Wabikon iced over last week and then opened up due to the high winds. Lucerne usually freezes up two or three weeks after Wabikon. The forecast is for a warming up of the area next week, but we'll believe that when we see it. It's currently very un-warm. Whatever happens with the weather, next week's plan is to take out the raft and chew bubblegum. And we're all out of bubblegum. If this weather keeps up, there also might be some snow shoveling. The lake's water level has fallen every month but one since May. If not for a super wet July, there might be talk of restricting outflows (I'm looking at you Swamp Creek).
