Still Summer

Normally in between Summer and Autumn you get unsettled weather that includes cool, wind, and storms mixed in with sun, fun, and flat as the seasons fight it out (Spoiler Alert : Fall always wins this one). Last week was unusually still. And sort of warm. We'll take it.

Mornings have been cool. As the air temperature dropped to the 40s°F, the lake gave up its heat in great clouds of stream.

The water in the air then condenses on lawns making every daybreak damp. This makes the grass seem happier than normal.

Other plants seem happy with the moist mornings, too.

It's berry season in the woods. They add a splash of ripening, probably poisonous color to the forest floor.

We need just a few more frost free weeks to mine a bumper crop of tomatoes this year.

The trails to the sapping fields looked all rain foresty last week.

Near mid-week, the lake stayed flat, but some clouds started to move in.

Up to 2 inches was predicted, but the lake got just less than a half of an inch.

The last dive for stuff that fell into the lake during the ski show was held later in the week. Our target was a rainbow clown wig that fell off at the end of the act. We found several items including a fork from the dining dock (the fork was returned to Waters Edge), but no wig. We found out later that the wig had floated back to shore and was probably thrown away. This surprised no one in that it was a uniquely ugly wig.

The amount of small fish under the show dock astounded us.

There is the occasional algae bloom as is normal for this time of year, but the lake remains mostly clear as crystal.

Sunsets have been coolish and pleasant .

Sunny, not too cold, and flat were the touch stones of last week. In retrospect, there should have been more skiing. Boat traffic has fallen off quite a bit last week. It seems that some are trying to beat the Labor day weekend rush and pull boats and lifts now rather than later. Big Mistake! The best skiing is September Skiing. The days may be shorter, but the traffic is lighter and the tubers are back in school.
