More Sun, Less Rain

July 27th through August 2nd, 2020

July ended with a flurry of warm, plenty of sun, and a touch of rain. The cooler nights have depressed the lake temperature to around 75°F, but the swimming is fine so get in the water you big baby. Last Monday was the final Monday ski show of the year. The crowd was a little light and the sky had a few clouds, but last we checked before the show, the chance for rain was tiny. As many fine acts graced over the top of the water, the clouds grew. The trouble started just as the final pyramid turned the corner and started to disassemble. As the pyramid-teers left the lake, the north end of Lucerne became obscured by a curtain of liquid terror. The crowd fled, but many were not fast enough to avoid the gusting wind, driving rain, and sharknados. After about a half an hour, there was over half an inch in the rain gauge and a rainbow overhead. After the storm, we found this on the shoulder of Potawatomi Trail. In addition to the hard rain and sharknados, the storm may have included some form of time warp. Wednesday's show had a larger crowd, no rain, and a much rougher lake that grew more angry with each passing act. The rough water did not scare the team with some even taunting the lake by donning sunglasses before their act. On Friday, we dove for the sunglasses, finding them in about 15 feet of water close to 150 feet from the shore. They are currently on the bar's pub table until Wednesday when they will be returned to their owner. The traffic on the lake grew heavy on Saturday. Many spent much time in, on, and under the water stopping only to grab a brat from the Lake Lucerne Advancement Association's brat and hot dog fund raiser. They ran out of brats far before we dragged our water logged bodies out from under Lucerne. On Sunday while a gentle rain wetted the deck and we were drying out in the back of the bar, a squirrel, most likely this guy, strolled across the bar's kitchen floor. The next 10 minutes were spent as two humans chased the fantastically elusive furry around the bar as we tried to herd it to an open door. This clear violation of the Treaty of Tolerance that has kept the peace between man and squirrel marks the first shot in a new war. The battle of the bar was inconclusive. Stay tuned for updates from the front as events warrant. The rain on Sunday brought with it cooler weather. The lake area got just under an inch of rain for the week, making it one of the dryer weeks in recent memory. Parts of many lawns remain en-puddled, making mowing a difficult and muddy prospect. Some went so far as to fake their own deaths to avoid lawn maintenance, but their deception was uncovered and I was strapped to a mower and sent out to the green sea. I can't be sure, but I thought I heard a squirrel laughing.

-Nemo's stocking up on BBs and other materiel.
