Lake Lucerne
There was a little snow in the hollows and crevices around the lake at the beginning of last week. That would change for the better by the weekend.
Lake Lucerne
There was also some of the white stuff packed into what's left of plants after several brutal hard freezes.
Lake Lucerne
By the weekend, all that remained of the snow was a slightly higher lake level and, in the mornings, a few icy puddles.
Lake Lucerne
Snow melt wasn't the only source of upward pressure on the lake level. Around midweek, a steady overnight and well into the day storm pushed the level of Lucerne up almost half an inch.
Lake Lucerne
On either side of the rain was sun. Late November sun. The kind of sun that kind of warms the ground, sort of can be felt on the skin, and unequivocally lifts sprits.
Lake Lucerne
And it wasn't just a peaking of light in the morning or late afternoon. The sun fell on the lake from day break until what seemed like an hour after sunset.
Lake Lucerne
Just after sunset was made a little brighter by a descending Jupiter and ascending Venus.
Lake Lucerne
The sun and above freezing temperatures have taken the air out of October's pumpkins.
Lake Lucerne
Before all the snow was gone, some unusually large amazon deliveries clogged Lake Lucerne Drive for a few hours.
Lake Lucerne
Any ice on the North end of the lake was essentially gone by the weekend.

Many lakes North of Hwy 64 are still ice covered. Lake Metonga isn't one of them
Lake Lucerne
A few weeks ago it seemed likely that the lake would have its ice-in well before Thanksgiving. Now it's clear that that will not happen. It could still go before December, but with each passing sunny day, it's less and less likely. The deer hunt has not gone well for the Knott Lane camp. So far they've seen only does and spunky spike whose ducking and running resulted in bagging a Maple and Basswood (not good eating). Venison supplies are down to a few sticks of old sausage and possibly a package of mystery meat found at the bottom of a chest freezer. Other camps have been wildly successful putting smiles on the faces of those that like Breakfast with Bambi or dislike deer shaped dents imprinted onto their cars. There's still time to bag another one (if you are properly licensed) and enter the 2019 Lake Lucerne Ice-In contest.
