First Snow Week

October 7th through 13th, 2019

Lake Lucerne
At the start of last week, it did not rain. This is no small feat for this year. Lawns became almost mow-able, fire pits grew less soggy. That didn't last. It ended on the weekend in an unseasonably cold way.
Lake Lucerne
The lake temperature started the week at 56°F. It was a little colder by the weekend. Nobody swam. Nobody skied.
Lake Lucerne
At the start of the week, we flew the drone South of the lake to get a few autumnal pictures of Roberts Lake. The start of the week was very windy and the aircraft struggled to hold position. The results were worth the few moments of dread and terror.
Lake Lucerne
Trees around the lake are clearly in a post peak period. Another week or so and they will all be leafless 'cept for the oaks.
Lake Lucerne
On the weekend, the lake got its first frost, first freeze, and first (sigh) snow.
Lake Lucerne
The roads are still in mostly good shape though some are a little mushy.
Lake Lucerne
Forest county bambies didn't seem to mind the colder, whiter woods.
Lake Lucerne
The snow didn't reach the extreme Southwestern part of the lake. The trees here are still pre-peak, too.
Lake Lucerne
For the second year in a row, the lake is being blessed with all the benefits of a mid-October snow. We'll list them just as soon as we can think of any. The freeze has dented the local bug population though. During last Summer, DEET (or less effective "natural" bug repellents combined with a weekly transfusion) were the rule. Now outdoor adventures are largely bug bite free. Huzzah! All the snow has put pressure on the knottlane code monkeys to get the Twelfth Annual Knottlane Lake Lucerne Ice-In Contest up sooner rather than later. It'll be up either this week or next. Special thanks this week to Toria for several of the images used in this update.
