Summer's Last Light

Next »

September 23rd through 29th

It was warmer last week. Not the warm you would normally see in July, but the coolish warm that mostly succeeds in banishing the chill from the days just after Labor Day. There was some sun, a very flat lake, and a bit of Autumnal color, too. In a normal year, we would expect the colors to peak by the end of last week, but there's still a touch of green in the canopy around Lake Lucerne. It's close though. Peak color's just a frost away. Looking to the West while boring tiny little holes in the sky, it looks like a few more days are needed to bring peak color to Lake Metonga's shores. It looks even less peaky to the East around Lakes Wabikon and Riley. It also rained. The biggest rain event dumped just over half an inch. All the wet days combined added up to just under an inch. The high lake level is holding. As is often the case, the inclement weather was book ended by some nice sunsets. There were many fishermen trying their luck on the flat water of the North end. Nobody skied. The lack of skiers may be due to the lake's temperature. It's getting downright cold. The siren's song of the flat, clear water called a few to swim, dive, and golfo. There was even a surprise manly swim or two. On one of the last dives of the year, we found a strange aluminum contraption under about 14 feet of water. After a bit of research, it was determined that you should not step on them with bare feet or you could get a cut on your heel, have to cruise back home, and drink blender mixed frozen concoctions. There was also something about losing your salt shaker, but that seemed more coincidental than causal. On the weekend, we were invited to a shindig that included good friends, great food, and new people with tiny noses. There was also some bovine peeking. The weather last week whispered Summer (albeit late Summer) but the sky above and around the lake honked back Fall. It was warmer, but the air still had an impending doomy feel that was exacerbated by the noisy Vees. The wonderful weather of last week should have included more skiing and swimming. Some might blame Mrs Nemo for not pushing for more Lake play, but I know it's nobody's fault. With the lake temperature hovering just above the 50s°F, it's hard to find the motivation to put on the suit. Maybe the lack of lake adventure last week could be my fault. Less than an inch of rain has the low spots of many lawns eutrophying up nicely. Mowing is becoming more of a land sport than a strange form of water ballet with tires and blades. The forecast is for a wall of water followed by a near frost. Should have swam more last week. The claim that Mrs Nemo is to blame for not enough lake time last week is wrong. I know it's my own damn fault.

-Nemo inventoried all the bar's salt shakers, none were reported missing.
