Fall In, Boat Out

September 16th through 22nd, 2019

Lake Lucerne
It was dryer last week. We still had rain in the northwoods, but the accumulations were negligible. There was also some sun. The first frost still eludes us, the bugs are getting bad again.
Lake Lucerne
The wet spots, puddles, and full fledged ponds that dotted local lawns have been shrinking. Another dryish week or three and mowing will not include navigation lights and a PDF.

Mushroom season on the forest floor is in full mush. Most are inedible. All are super slippery when trod upon.
Lake Lucerne
The forest is about a week or so away from peak color. We'd estimate it to currently be around 30%.
Lake Lucerne
It should be noted that some trees are a little bit past 30%.

Last week, a flock or two of geese were spotted V-ing their way South. The strange fuzzy birds that have been munching on the bar's feeders all year don't seem to be going anywhere.

With the weekend came a few clouds, a little drizzle, and Art in the Square in Crandon.
Lake Lucerne
The event was held on the Courthouse square. It was well attended and mostly parked up.

On Sunday, it was deemed to be time. Time to pull the ski boat from the flat, clear, and increasingly cold water. It is certainly a melancholy time for those of us that love to fly over a wake and glide over the flat. Many of the same people also like to ride the lifts and fall down snow covered hills. The anticipation of such events takes much of the sting out of the boat pulling. That, and the upcoming posting of the annual Lake Lucerne Ice-In contest. Why nobody skied down to the landing will forever be a mystery.
Lake Lucerne
In addition to being dryer, it was a little warmer last week. The lake temperature rose to a still cool 67°F, causing some (me mostly) to reconsider any boat pulling. Schedules and the inevitable encroaching Winter extinguished any hope of another week or so of late season water skiing. The trailer was attached to the truck. The landing's new pier is very nice as was the diligent and helpful weed inspector guy. There are still a few ski boats left (not ours **sigh**) but fewer and fewer every day. For those that find themselves among the unpulled, there's still some swimming, diving, and Golfo left in that water.

-Nemo should have been flying over that wake.
