Hot and Wet Week

Next »

September 18th through 24th, 2017

Last week started off a little warm and a little wet. There was plenty of flatness between the drops for footin' and more. There was enough warm to keep the lake water above 70°F. There were two rain events last week. The first was a longer shower that produced a ground soaking 0.4 inches. The second storm separated Friday into a warm morning part and a hot afternoon section. Friday's storm was short, loud, intense and raised the lake about three quarters of an inch. Just before the sky opened up on Friday, some were on the water eating up all the flat. We were going to do a few more runs, but the clouds started to collect and look more than a little "strange". It would have been an interesting story had we stayed on the lake. Wet, cold, and painful, but interesting. The trees still have a way to go before peak color especially in Crandon and around Lake Metonga. Cardinal park is having its tennis courts resurfaced. The two deer running around Potawatomi Trail on the North end of the lake have yet to meet the right speeding car. The eagles are getting more active. There were three circling around Knott Lane at the same time late last week. The hot came with rough water. It calmed down nicely on Sunday night and the ski show that is this September was back on. After the ides of September, the lake can be served Winter appetizers, Fall entrees, or Summer desserts. Last week had us all gorging on metaphorical puddings, pastries, and pies. This year, the buffet of Summer seems to have no end. The experienced seasonal diner knows that this will not last. Autumn's vittles and Winter's cold snacks are being prepped and will be in front of us all too soon. Until then, eat all you take and try not to pull a muscle.

-Nemo, dreading "Weigh in Wednesday" after all that pie.
