Ripening Summer

September 4th through 10th
Typically, September starts Summery with a tinge of Fall and ends Autumnally with just a faint echo of Summer. Last week, the first full week of September, started off way too close to frosty than dewy. There was a notable lack of sun and plenty of misty rain, too. It got better, but the sticky cool that is Fall has stained our minds and jackets and that doesn't come out easily. Conversely, the ski show dock at Water's Edge came out surprisingly easily. We had anticipated a few lost hours, injuries, and a possible drowning, but a strong crew had the dock stacked on the shore in less than an hour with no broken or semi-broken personnel. Huzzah! No more dock starts until next year. Fishing on the North end of the lake was interrupted only by stretching and making some weird sounds. Late in the week the sun came out and it was confirmed that peak color is still a few weeks away. There's always some trees that don't get the memo, but most are still a summery green. Other plants are exploding with color like fireworks on the 4th. Many mushrooms are also in full mush. Extra care was taken when checking the lake temperature (currently at 66F). Some lake creature got the rope all eggy or something. Overheard on the side of Potawatomi Trail;
Bambi, "So, you wait until the last second, then you jump out in front of it."
Thumper, "And you're sure I won't get hurt?"
Bambi, "Nah, you'll be fine. Plus the look on their faces is hilarious!" So far, September has clearly not been Fall-icly challenged. There has been no shortage of cool and gray. That seems to be changing. Temperatures are expected to push back up and clouds and rain will be noted by their absence. Swimmers and skiers should only be a light shade of blue and that should blend nicely with the coming reds, oranges, and yellows of the maples.

-Nemo: Getting his blue on.
