Faux Summer Week

Next »

August 21st through 27th, 2017

There was water skiing last week. There was also swimming, boating, diving and other lake play, but through it all the air seemed cooler (it was) and the water seemed colder (IT WAS). The lake temperature is getting close to the tipping point that divides swimmers. Last we checked, the water borne were shades of pink. Soon they will be shades of blue. In addition to EM spectrum based changes, the auditory responses of those that dive into the lake will soon change from joyous to more screamy. Last week, some have been fishing the North end of the lake pretty hard in an effort to fatten up before heading South. The last ski show of 2017 had a light, jacketed crowd and more than a few shivery performers. If you require more Last Ski Show imagery, click the last ski show link in the upper right of this summary page. Milkweed pods, a more subtle sign of impending Autumn, are starting to pop up along local roads. Other signs of the coming Fall are more crass and cold. There was a time this Summer when the rain stopped and the lake level dropped a few inches. That time has ended. Righteous rain storms have dampened the area for the past few weeks and the lake level is once again approaching record levels. Twenty four inches above the nail is this century's record lake level. We've gained about two inches of lake since mid-August. Less than three more inches will require another entry into the record books. The forecast last week could have been "Summer with impending gloom". It started off sunny and calm (and a little cool) and ended in rain (also with a little cool). The lake temperature is hovering just above 70°F, which should keep the swimmers pinkish and talk of ice-in among the men at a minimum. It might be best to pick up a tow rope and get in as many runs as possible to ward off any post hypothermic flash backs of calm skier-less waters. It also might be a good idea to begin to line up a crew to pull boats, lifts, and piers. Unless you enjoy doing such tasks by yourself. Then give us a call and we'll set up a time in a few weeks for you to pull our lift too, thus doubling your enjoyment!

-Nemo does not enjoy such tasks even with a hoard or more.
