Not Peak Color

September 26th through October 2nd, 2016

Lake Lucerne
There was a splash of color in the trees, mornings were positively un-balmy, and it was damp at the start, but last week ended on a Summery note that pushed peak color back a week.

Mushrooms! The bar's ink cap patch popped up early last week during the wet.
Lake Lucerne
Other types of 'shrooms were sprouting up, too.
Lake Lucerne
After the rains, it was a virtual fungus fest.
Lake Lucerne
Non-fungi based plants are also adding color to the area.

As quickly as they appeared, many of the patches were gone by the weekend. Some by natural processes, others got mowed

Grass continues to stretch to the sky at alarming rates. The sound of mowers carried across the water and bounced off the surrounding hills all last weekend.

Knott Lane continues to get its road ripping underground utilities. Consider using alternate routes.
Lake Lucerne
Last weekend is normally when the trees attain peak color. Some trees are following the long held tradition. Others are holding on to their green.

Late in the week, we went up to get a better feel for the color.
Lake Lucerne
Most of the trees are more green than gold.
Lake Lucerne
By next weekend, we'll have far more gold then green. More red, yellow and brown, too.
Lake Lucerne
The lake water is just above "Forget It". Still, impromptu ski shows featured a lot of pre-show screaming.
Lake Lucerne
Aside from wailing and shrieking, skiers tried to put as much air between them and the cold blue.

The boundary between seasons is rarely well defined. This Summer to Fall transition is more blurred than most. The trees, air, and rain suggest that Summer has a bit more life. The Tourettes inducing lake water states otherwise. You can't watch the involuntary movements and vocalizations of skiers and not know the seasons have turned the corner. If you are coming up North this week, bring a hat.
