Mostly Spring

March 28th through April 3rd, 2016

Lake Lucerne
Last week started off as a typical early Spring week. It was sunny, cool/warm, and the lake ice was melting.

Rain remnants, in addition to melting ice and snow, are keeping the flows into the lake filled.
Lake Lucerne
The first ducks of the year landed on one of the very few spots of open water.

Later in the week, the lake got some rain. It was just under a half an inch, but the water shed was saturated so the lake went up a few inches.

Still later, the rain turned to snow. Much of the snow melted upon contact with the ground. Some stuck and made driving interesting.

By the end of the week, the nail was only 3.75 inches above the lake's surface. You have to go back over 10 years since the lake level was this high. Huzzah!
Lake Lucerne
There's still ice on Lake Lucerne, but the signs that this is going to change soon are all there. Ducks were spotted, Lake Wabikon is ice free, there is talk of ending the tapping season in a week or so, and members of the College of Loons have been spotted buying sake and mulling around the shoreline. The weekend cold front brought yet another fine crop of Wisconsin Coconuts for the sugarists to deal with and may have pushed ice-out back a few days, but it'll come.
