Christmas Seasonable

December 2nd through 8th, 2014

Lake Lucerne
The major event this week was the weather, or rather, the lack of weather. For weeks now, the lake area has suffered through freakishly cold temperatures and more than our normal share of snow. Last week, the temperatures returned to normal for the first time since, I think, 2010 and we got just a little of the white stuff. Three cheers for the average. Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

The ice still reflects past cold weather atrocities. Eight inches is a lot of ice for this time of year.

Knott Lane's condition is normal for this time of year: Snow covered and icy.

With the 24th Annual Lake Lucerne Bottle Rocket War just under 5 weeks away, it was time for system integration and static testing of the fort forms. Despite almost losing my lesser eye (non-shooting eye, ie. left eye) , all systems were found to be within tolerance. See you on the 10th of January, 2015?

Last Friday, the sky was cloudless, the air was a torrid 25 F, the wind was light, and the sound of an angry bee could be heard in the distance on the north end of Lake Lucerne.

The long shadows of the ground support team/human sundial reminded us that, in spite of the almost summer like temperatures, we are approaching Deep Winter.

There is no hurry in picking your ice-out date. The contest is not up and the ice is going to be around for a while.

Looking to the west, Lake Metonga, the Crandon area's second best lake, seems to also be frozen.
Lake Lucerne
There's currently about 4 to 6 inches of snow on lawns and less on the lake. We could use another snow event in the next few days to keep the snowmobilers happy and the snowblowers fed. The forecast is predicting a warm up, then a small snow event. This is pretty much analogous to giving an 8 year old socks and corduroy pants for Christmas. Useful, but hard to get excited about.

-Nemo thinks the ice in the middle is thick enough, but'll let you go first.
