Not Quite Fall

September 17th through 23rd, 2013

There were a few more omens of Autumn on the lake this week. Empty lifts, boats slowly heading to the landing and a dropping water temperature. There were also more than a few signs that Summer was not over yet, if not chronologically at least metaphorically. The cool water was still swimmable, skiing was great, there was rain and two 6 syllable words in the opening paragraph of this week's summary. Summer has not ended yet. Rain. We got a little. Under a half an inch. Need more. It's official. ATVs can run the roads around the lake. Since they pretty much did before they could legally, there shouldn't be much of a difference. A lone eagle has been hunting the north end for most of the week. North end eagle food has been jumpy for most of the week. Bacon-Apple martinis were interesting. The candied bacon garnish could become a Summer staple. There was footing! Now, some might argue for slower, more sedate activities during this transitional period between the seasons. They argue that the water is cold, the boats need pulling as do the lifts, so we need to moderate our activities. We have a carefully crafted response to this... Good-bye moderation! No frost yet, but if history is any guide, it will happen soon. The lake is holding at about 67°F. That's cool, but warmer than the air for most of the day. Lake Lucerne is near the temperature where the swim suited will have some trouble shivering it off, the wet suited won't mind and the cigar smoking, beer drinking skiers are too concerned with juggling vices to care. It will undoubtedly be colder by next weekend. A few weeks after that it may be time to think about this year's annual Knottlane Ice-In contest.

-Nemo, "Don't throw cigars into the lake, it makes them soggy and hard to light."
