Labor Day Week

August 27th through September 3rd, 2013

Lake Lucerne
Summer is not dead. Oh sure, it doesn't have that spring in its step it had back in June, nor its ability to recover from a cold like it did late July into August, but the lake is still in the mid 70's°F, the raft is still in and there's plenty of gas in the boat. Summer is clearly not ready for the home yet.

Rain! Over four inches of mostly the best kind of rain (night rain) graced the lake area last week. Streams and creeks are flowing and the lake is higher than ever for the year.

The Lake Lucerne Association held its late Summer gathering. They talked of numbers, fish and invasive species. For a long time.

On Sunday the Knott Lane golf outing, bar and grill was held as scheduled just hours after the last rain drops slowed the greens.

The winners were mostly a new team that putted long, drove longer and finished with a record 4 under par for the nine hole round.

The well attended after party and award ceremony started at five o'clock that evening and ended just over seven hours later.

Some events of note that transpired during the last big bash of the Summer included the record lighting of ten Bailey's Comets at once. Huzzah!

Drinks became more colorful/less traditional as the night raced by.
Lake Lucerne
Before, during and after the party hundreds of loon-snack sized fish hid under the rafts from a pair of the hungry birds.
Lake Lucerne
By Monday the most intense boat traffic of the year (2 or 3 tubers, a few skiers and a water-sea plane) had gone into hiding making it safe to spend some quality bottom time with the lake.

While the weather is still showing much of the signs of Summer, there are some subtle omens pointing to an impending jacketed season. More and more color in the trees, a damp cold in the evening air and skiing on a steaming lake just before sunset are all manifestations of an impending Fall. Our advice to those trying to cope with the certain demise of the best of the four seasons is to not dwell on it and instead fish, ski, tennis and golf all you can before the frost. That, or head to Florida.
