Thaw Report I

Next »

February 12th through 15th, 2013

The second week of Thaw has the ice on the lake at almost 17 inches thick. It should hit the half yard mark by next week. As the snow melts from roofs, trees and limbs, icicles grow down stream. On many metal roofs, in addition to a trickle of snowmelt, big wet slabs of snow slowly slide off and slop on the ground. The sound this makes can wake one out of a deep sleep. On a similar note, the sound of a noisy badger living under your bedroom can also end sleep. Icicles and snow slabs can combine to give a cabin "teeth". Thaw, that time of winter where high temperatures can get above freezing. On occasion. We had some such days lately, but most fell a bit short. Tree tapping season is about a month away. Snowmobiling season is at its peak. We haven't been hit with a really big storm. The largest was snowstorm Ed at six inches. All the 2 and 4 inchers have added up to quite a bit of snow on the lake and trails. This adds up to quite a bit of snowmobiles on the lake, trails, roads, bars and front yards. In the battle to relocate the badger currently living under the bar, the current score is badger 1, us 0. We've since fled back to Milwaukee to regroup. The next campaign will start around Saint Patrick's day.

-Nemo: In some ways a Badger fan, in some ways not so much.
