Despite peak color being behind us, some of the trees acted like they hadn't heard.

Construction season for the north end of Lake Lucerne started on Monday and peaked on Wednesday. Many cool vehicles paraded past during the destruction and recreation of the road. The "Road Eater" (seen here) was my favorite!

Potawatomi Trail was exhaustively graded and thoroughly squished by Wednesday afternoon.

The pavement was laid during one of the year's worst leaf storms. Drifts of up to one foot were reported.

A lone loon fished the north end of the lake all week.

Just after the last pavement was put down, we got our first dusting of snow. It wasn't much and it didn't last long but any little bit helps.

The north end of Lucerne had on and off snow squalls until the early afternoon on Saturday.

Evenings have been cool, if not downright cold. Beer and fire have proven to be an effective defense against the icy grip of Winter. Really good beer may have been a truly superior defense but all we had was Hamms, the "King of Beers". I don't support regicide but on occasion I understand it.

The northwoods has entered that part of the calendar where outdoor types are more worried about premature Winter than extended Summer. Most boats are billeted, lifts shored and golfers jacketed. Speaking of golf, the leaves that are carpeting the rough and invading fairways and some greens, have made finding even good shots a very special experience. While traveling away from the Nicolet Country club toward Crandon on Hwy 8, one of the biggest skunks seen in awhile is taking a dirt nap on the side of the road just short of town. It's a real treat for the senses. Bring your close pin if you're going to town until the smell settles. Or was that the Packer game? Upon review, it could be that Budweiser is the "King of Beers" and Hamms is just a local regent or something. Hamms lite could be a serf?<br><br><br>-Nemo, Hamms drinker, not planning regicide.
