The First Weekend After Ice-Out

Next »

March 23rd through 25th, 2012

Spring. There was spring dew on the new plant growth around the lake on Saturday morning. There may well have been dew on the new puppy growth around the lake but they wouldn't stay still for a macro picture. There was dew and a growing layer of dust on the maple syruping stuff. By late Saturday morning, 3.5 fresh gallons of very dark syrup was in bottles. If the trees stay dry, last Saturday looks like the final canning of a very disappointing season. The ice is gone! The lake is cold! Fifty degrees Fahrenheit is really warm for this time of year. It could be the warmest ever. Nobody swam. A March ice-out. Wow. Area plants are budding and leafing. The golf course (NCC) looked crowded on Sunday. Maple syrup season looks over. There is hope that, with the record warm weather, big rain from unstable air will cover the lake. Much rain was predicted last week but we got just a fraction of it. More is forecast for next week along with cooler temperatures.

-Nemo didn't swim.
