Skiing Weekend IV

Next »

January 26th through 28th, 2012

Arriving to the northwoods late Thursday night allowed us to get to Ski Brule a half an hour before the lifts were put into motion on a surprisingly warm (15°F), blue skied Friday morning. The hills were lightly attended all day. We were also blessed with very good snow. The sawmill in Long Lake is no more. It has been going through the process of being raised to the ground for a few weeks now. This conveyer and small out building are all that remains. The bar with the Hamm's sign across the street from the mill is for sale. On Saturday, 8 inches of snow was shoveled from a small patch on Lake Lucerne and a hole made in the crystal clear covering. There's currently 13 inches of very good ice on the lake. Sometime between Friday evening and Saturday morning, the Southern fort was destroyed. And the Northern fort was destroyed even more. Mrs Nemo observed that it looked like the work of snow-people but she had never heard of them hitting anything so big. I replied that they didn't. But we are meant to think they did. These tracks are side by side, snow-people always ride single file to hide their numbers. And look at those blast points. Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so accurate. Whether it was snow-people or Imperial Stormtroopers, Mrs Nemo left an encrypted message for them should they return. Knott Lane is snowy, but passable. About what you would expect for this time of year. The wind picked up on Saturday and blew around the 3 inches of fresh power that hit the area Friday night. The temperature began to fall fast so we left. The mild weather on Friday had us thinking that winter was losing its grip. Saturday's blowing snow and plummeting temperatures had us reflecting how wrong we were the previous day. Don't be fooled by above freezing readings or a few more minutes of daylight. Winter will be chilling bones and driving up heating costs for several more weeks. We'll be back in 2 weeks to turn up the heat, shovel and ski.

-Nemo claims these are not the droids you're looking for.
