Deer Hunting Weekend

November 18th through 20th, 2011

Lake Lucerne
Arriving at the lake just after 4:30 PM on Friday, we were witness to a great late fall sunset.
Lake Lucerne
One of the pumpkins from Halloween performed a face plant, marking the end of barefoot season on Lake Lucerne.
Lake Lucerne
The lack of "course closed" signs and snow called to the bundled and non-hunting for one last round.
Lake Lucerne
The water hazards were far less hazardous.
Lake Lucerne
On the 9th tee, the lite rain turned to ice balls and the volume of precipitation and cold increased.
Lake Lucerne
The souring weather coupled with the snow traps on the right side of nine made for an interesting hole.
Lake Lucerne
Saturday's bar night featured soups, shepherd's pie and Rhinelander shorties. Ya should have stopped over.

The snow ended by Sunday morning. Usually Fall slides into Winter over the course of several days. This year the boundry could be measured in minutes. One minute you're missing a 25 foot birdie putt on 8 (by a fraction of an inch) and the next your brushing snow and ice balls off the car.

The condition of Knott Lane, while not impassable, has been better.
Lake Lucerne
In addition to the first morning of Winter, Sunday saw the annual "Gathering of the Loons" on the north end of Lucerne. About 2 dozen of the uncharacteristically quiet birds swam in a slow, brownian motion toward the south.
Lake Lucerne
Wabikon is frozen over and Silver Lake has ice fingers grasping out from the shore. Lake Lucerne is currently cold and clear as crystal, but largely ice free. On Silver lake, one fisherman was seen working the unfrozen half of the lake on Saturday. No boats were seen on Lucerne, let alone fishermen, all weekend. The loon gathering was a new experience for us. It was strange seeing almost 2 dozen loons and not hearing one haunting peep. The hunters from our camp reported seeing several gray squirrels, a couple of golfers, a fisherman and plenty of wolf tracks, but no/few deer.

-Nemo, cold but largely ice free.
