May Ice Weekend

April 29th through May 1st, 2011

Lake Lucerne
On Friday, after a poor nine holes at Nicolet, we made it to the lake to find streams still flowing into an ice covered Lucerne.

Last week's stormy weather added up to almost an inch of rain. We need more, but that's not bad.

Early Saturday morning, buckets were trailered from the northwoods marking the end of the 2011 sapping season.

They were washed and rinsed

And stacked.

There were quite a few of them.

Meanwhile, the wind picked up and began driving the edges of the ice sheet onto the shore.

The edge ice is rotten but still pretty thick. There could be chunks of frozen water on lake Lucerne for the opening of fishing season..

There were snow fluries when we left on Sunday. It's May. Let's hope this freezing trend does not continue. With a few windy days, some warmth and some rain the lake may be ice free by next weekend. If it stays calm and cold, Lake Lucerne could be ice covered well into May. Despite the lake ice, there are signs of Spring around the lake area. The grass is greener and Wilson's is for sale/open in Crandon. Father John said mass on Sunday morning in Laona. There's something about that priest that reminds me of Pope John Paul II.
