The First Weekend in Fall
September 24th through 26th
Rain! In buckets!  On Friday, but mostly Thursday, the northwoods were treated to more rain than anytime during the last few years.  Almost 3.5 inches.  Streams flowed into the lake all weekend.
Was this weekend "Peak Color" weekend?  There was ample evidence in Crandon...
and at the golf course.
and in the woods outside of the big city...
Most however, were in full leaf.  There was enough green to suggest that peak is a few days away.  For what it's worth, the Mayor of Knottlane insisted that this was peak weekend.
A few trees even seemed to have been in a "Post Peak" state.
And speaking of freezing, some air was burned in 2 SCUBA dives last weekend.  Saturday's dive was cut short when I was chased from the waters by 2 really big bass.  On Sunday, cribs in 8 to 20 feet of water on the northwestern shore were checked for fish.  The big bass were seen about 20 feet away but did not come close.  There are few fish on the cribs.
Sunday morning was cold.  The lake steamed as the water temperature creeped closer to freezing.

Determining the day, let alone the weekend, the tree colors peak is subjective.  You could make pretty good cases for this weekend or next.  The water temperature is currently 58 F.  There were a few skiers in the water but mostly there were people pulling boats, piers and lifts out.  The 2010 Ice in Contest is coded and tested.  I'll put it up sometime in the next 2 weeks.
