Longest Week (most sun) of the Year

June 13th through 22nd, 2008

Lake Lucerne
Friday's evening weather was repeated pretty much all week. It was a bit cooler than usual, cloudy with some sun and a bit of rain.
Lake Lucerne
When the sun was out, it was hot and hide ripping. For much of the week we used liquid burka (anything SPF 30 or more) to keep sunburn at bay.

The Forect County ATV Patrol was spotted in action. (*Queue Nelson Muntz * Ha Ha). Let it be known that flying down Potawatomi Trail, blowing stop signs, and riding with 3 or more people on an ATV was, is, and ever shall be kind of dumb and ticket worthy.

The bugs are out in the northwoods. A few are friendly and cool like this one. Most are pests and out for (your) blood. The best advice I can give is bring DEET. In 55 gallon barrels.
Lake Lucerne
The first ski show of the year did not disappoint.
Lake Lucerne
Due to a smaller group it was shorter than last year's show.
Lake Lucerne
The troupe this year has a bit more girls than boys.
Lake Lucerne
Some of the crashes made the spectators gasp. No one was physically hurt during the performance but the emotional scar of losing the "Skiing on a canoe paddle" battle, and thus the right to wear the captain's hat during the next show could last a lifetime.
Lake Lucerne
Winged wildlife was all over the north end of the lake. There were woodpeckers...
Lake Lucerne
Ducks, both big and little...
Lake Lucerne
An eagle or two seemed to always be overhead.
Lake Lucerne
And there were loons. Both the water fowl kind and the cutting and hauling firewood during the hotter days of the year for the next maple syrup season kind.
Lake Lucerne
The golf courses are in great shape. Much time was spent working on our short games by chipping balls from the dock onto the raft.
Lake Lucerne
Mrs "Call me Tiger" Nemo was the only one to get a ball to "stick".
Lake Lucerne
The water was very clear, as always, and cold for this time of year. The lake temperature for the past dozen summers has been around the mid to lower 70's°F this time of year. The lake is currently about 10 degrees below that.
Lake Lucerne
The clear water made diving for golfballs easy and fun. The water temperature, not so much.
Lake Lucerne
The fish on the north end are active and plentiful. The school of bluegills near our raft numbered in the hundreds.
Lake Lucerne
Mrs Nemo spotted one bass with a fish in its mouth that was too big for it to swallow. It seemed to be wondering what to do next.
Lake Lucerne
Lots of good skiing days last week, but the skiers seem to only come out during the weekend. This could be a function of the water temperature, but the price of gas could also be at play here. I tried to convince Mrs Nemo that mixing two half-full gallons of milk with different expiration dates would result in an explosion. She went ahead anyway and not only mixed them, but shook the mixture up in front of me. It did not explode. Maybe 2%. We'll be back next weekend to paint some windows, pull fish from the cold depths, and ski up all that flatness. Plus I've got to get a golfball to stick on the raft or forever be known as the lesser golfer.
