Ice-Check Weekend

April 11th through 13th, 2008

Lake Lucerne
The rain we hit just after Green Bay turned to ice pellets around Townsend and then snow around Carter. We arrived just in time for a good old fashioned dumping. By morning, we had drifts over 18 inches by the bar.

To better protect the new webcam from the elements, we planned to replace the the temporary roof that was thrown up last weekend.
Lake Lucerne
A new roof was fabricated and installed with a surprisingly low injury count. It looks like the old camera will not be back for a while.
Lake Lucerne
The new camera is working better than expected so far.

The snow on the north end of the lake is deep. Digging out the furnace vent is becoming a weekly ritual. I think that the snow is mostly behind us, but that's what I thought last weekend.
Lake Lucerne
The ice was 23 inches thick on Sunday. I wrote 22 inches on the ice mostly because I had such a good time making the first giant "2". With the warm weather, the ice should be below 12 inches by next weekend.

Cylons! No...wait...it's just the aux cooker being fired at night. Krispa and xLt had to boil all evening to try not to fall too far behind the flood of sap from the maples.
Lake Lucerne
With the cooker in the sap shack, they can boil down about 200 gallons in 24 hours. They were falling behind from the start of the weekend.

Last year the golf course opened on April 16th. This year don't call for a tee time anytime soon. On the positive side, the snow was melting fast when we left. The ice looks like it will be out by the end of April +/-3 days.
