Last Weekend in March

March 28th through 30th, 2008

Lake Lucerne
There was still plenty of sun in the sky when we arrived at the north shore of the lake. Plenty of snow and cold too.

After a preliminary check of the webcam, no obvious cause of its malfunction was found, so we went to eat. Mallard's on Metonga (the old Lake Metonga Supper Club) has a great fish fry (Haddock $10, Perch $12 (never had the perch though)), friendly service, and a magnificent view. We ate there. Before you say it, I really have to update the restaurant reviews. There just hasn't been enough time to do it right, what with work, applying for gas loans, and drinking. So I vow to lay off the sauce and have pedals installed in the car to free up more time. Anyone know where I can get a V8 to pedal conversion kit for a 96' Suburban?
Lake Lucerne
Bar night on Friday was brightly lit by the Bailey's Comet.

The webcam and I had a talk on Saturday.

Me: How are you?

Webcam: Fine! Never Better!

Me: OK, you're telling me you are fine but why are you not sending any pictures?

Webcam: Yup, can't recall the last time I felt this good.

Me: I've sent you commands to move and you seem to be ignoring them. What's up with that?

Webcam: I don't feel like moving. I'm...aaa..meditating. That's it! I'm pondering my place in the universe. Now go away.

Me: I'm pondering taking you off your mount and resetting you and if that doesn't get your attention I'll send you back to Toshiba for service.

Webcam: Oh yeah, tough guy? I'd like to see you try. Now quit bothering me.

A short while later, an insolent device was subject to a hard reset. The procedure failed to quash the cheekiness of the device so it's off to Toshiba with it. Next weekend, while this rude camera gets it's comeuppance, a well mannered Panasonic webcam will be brought on-line in the now vacant shelter.

After the webcam talk, it was time to check the ice.
Lake Lucerne
26 inches of good ice means that ice-out will not be anytime soon.
Lake Lucerne
The meager amounts of sap collected was boiled down all weekend. I think they have about 8 gallons of syrup canned and are waiting for labels.
Lake Lucerne
On Saturday night, we continued to burn the large basswood on the north end
Lake Lucerne
After a short while, the burning tree reminded all of the savory Bailey's Comet and we headed to the bar.
Lake Lucerne
We toiled on our layering long into the night.
Lake Lucerne
The snow on the trails is getting a bit thin to sled on. The snow on the lake and its shores is still plentiful. Copious even. Deep. I'm getting sick of snow. And don't get me started on ice.
Lake Lucerne
I've tried to get these pictures up as soon as possible to keep them fresh. They are not as fresh as the webcam's were. Those could be just a few minutes old. While these may not be fresh enough to eat raw, they should be good for soups and stews. We'll be back next weekend to configure and install the new webcam, ushering in a new era of image freshness. Truly, salad days are just hours away on the north end of Lucerne.
