Winter Weekend

February 15th & 16th, 2008

Lake Lucerne
Saturday morning was cold. We planned to ski Brule, but first had to check the ice depth.

The webcam has performed very well during the unusally cold weather. I think the worst of winter is behind us. That's good for any outdoor electronics.

The snow is deep on the lake with a 2 to 3 inch slush layer just above the ice. Trudging out to find a spot to drill a hole was slow going.

The ice is about 17.5 inches thick. Speaking of ice, the ice-out contest should be up soon. I'm trying to make the page more user friendly and the prizes will be more than just a t-shirt, but I've said too much. Watch for the page some time this week.

The brief warm spell, just after the bottle rocket war, was not kind to the forts. The walls were thinner and tippy-er. One of the forts was destroyed by a pack of snowmobilers enraged by its lack of aesthetics. I'm not completely sure what the snow critics said about "Baltic Avenue", but I heard it went something like, "Me no like this fort, me break it now!"

Part of the igloo has collapsed. I only hope the renters were not hurt. XLt has let me know that a partial refund of down payments made by people and corporations wanting to rent the structure may be reimbursed.

After a great day on Brule, the sun interacted with high clouds in the late afternoon to form a halo. We'll be back in 2 weeks to repeat this weekend.
