Ice-out/Maple Syrup Festival Weekend

April 14th through 16th, 2005

Lake Lucerne
On late Thursday afternoon the sun was hot and the ice in full retreat.
Lake Lucerne
We put in a paddle boat to try to rescue a lost golf ball. We found we could not get more than 10 feet into the ice field.
Lake Lucerne
The ice on the edges of the sheet was thin enough to break through.
Lake Lucerne
Further into the self, the thickness of the ice stopped us cold.
Lake Lucerne
Friday was spend on the golf course. The best thing that can be said about the 18 holes we played is that we were not eaten by bears. At night, Mr EMT had us taste test 6 batches of syrup to determine which run would be entered in the syrup contest.
Lake Lucerne
The clouds came in on Saturday. The ice would last only another 24 hours.
Lake Lucerne
Giant formations (200+ birds) of geese came from the south during the afternoon.
Lake Lucerne
Trapped! The wind picked up during a boat ride and the shifting ice closed in around Mr EMT and Krispa. It took several minutes for them to break free.
Lake Lucerne
It was amusing to one of the newer Lake Lucerne visitiors who goes by the lane name G-Meg.
Lake Lucerne
On Friday I went for a quick swim in only a swim suit. I asked Mrs. Nemo to join me. She replied something like, "Nuts to that!". On Saturday we wanted to see if the ice could support a man. The water is much more tolerable in a full wet suit but the ice was to thin to support much of anything.
Lake Lucerne
I ended up building a little fort before exiting the lake to go to the...
Lake Lucerne
Forest County Maple Syrup Festival!
Lake Lucerne
There was much to buy. Items included maple syrup,
Lake Lucerne
and sock monkeys.
Lake Lucerne
Some were not as excited before the Maple Syrup judging as others or they may have been practicing for some future "perp walk".
Lake Lucerne
Just in case you forgot the words to the Crandon Cardinals fight song it's on the wall of the gym. There will be a test later.
Lake Lucerne
Something about the Laona Kellys logo reminded me of Notre Dame.
Lake Lucerne
Back at the lake, the wind was breaking up the ice and pushing it into the shore.
Lake Lucerne
The southernly wind pushed the ice north. By Saturday night only the north end had any ice. A little survived the night but was gone by early afternoon on Sunday. We'll be back on the opening weekend of fishing.
