Easter Weekend

March 25th through 27th, 2005

Lake Lucerne
Jupiter and the Moon rose just before we made it to the lake. The light from the full Moon washed out stars and comets but lit the lake almost enough for golf.
Lake Lucerne
Maple syrup season started just days before, and sap was boiled down all night.
Lake Lucerne
Saturday morning started bright and cool. It soon became bright and warm (warm for the northwoods this time of year anyway.)
Lake Lucerne
There was about 4 inches of snow on the lake and many snowmobile tracks.
Lake Lucerne
Crandon is largely snow free. The Hotel Crandon is still a good place for breakfast.
Lake Lucerne
Small signs on the tables at the Hotel Crandon made the claim that March is national nutrition month. We all read the cards while piling butter on pancakes and dunking sausages in syrup. The table quickly was divided into camps: Those that interpreted the card as saying we should eat more (the dessertarans) and those that claimed we should eat better (the diettishous). A third camp (the mortified), felt it strange to be taking pictures in restaurants and quickly fled the scene after eating.
Lake Lucerne
Meanwhile, back in the woods, the sap flowed.
Lake Lucerne
It may be warming up, but there is still plenty of snow.
Lake Lucerne
And ice. Almost 28 inches of the stuff covers the lake.
Lake Lucerne
The snow layer on the top of the ice made for some pretty bad golf. Yeah, that's it. The bad golf was due to the snow.
Lake Lucerne
Easter Sunday started out better than Saturday.
Lake Lucerne
"Rotten Ice" started showing up on the shores. Ice-out could be just a few weeks away.
Lake Lucerne
After the snow melts the lake could be several feet deeper.
Lake Lucerne
Knott lane is less icy, more sloppy.
Lake Lucerne
We'll be back Friday. I hope to get the webcam up then (it gave me fits last Saturday but it's close.)
