Winter Weekend I

Next »

February 10th through 12th, 2005

We made it to the lake before 5:00 PM on Thursday. It was a little cloudy but otherwise perfect (no wind, not too cold) for this time of year. By mid-morning on Friday the clouds were thinning and the temperature was above freezing. We could not enjoy the good weather right away, there were holes to be drilled! There is only 21 inches of good ice. Ice-out could come early this year. It has been said during ancient times that, "Man fears time, but time only fears the pyramids". I would like to add,"Time laughs openly at the bottle rocket forts". After 5 weeks, all that remains of the once formidable structures is a small scattering of debris. There is about half an inch of snow on the lake. Just the right amount to scrawl taunts in to passing planes. We call it "Artistic Walking". A little later came a very clear night. I'm not too good with the "polar alignment" thing so no pictures were taken which is a real shame, the nebula in Orion was awe inspiring. Saturday morning was worthy of an epic poem. My poetry is known to cause intestinal cramps, so this picture will have to do. Mrs. Nemo was very happy to have a blank canvas and all morning to create... Snow flowers! One of the first harbingers of Spring. Every once and a while the ice would "pop" and we would find fractures like the one here. The fractures, drifts, and occasional fishermen make golf on the lake less easy, but the fairway is really really wide and the water hazards are covered (with ice). Little snow = good rolls. While hiking from shot to shot, putting rude messages in the snow is pretty much manditory. He's a Cinderella boy coming out of nowhere. The former system engineer now about to become the Master's Champion. He has 180 yards to go. It looks like he's got about....a nine iron. Tears in his eyes, I guess, as he lines up this last shot. It looks like a miraculous shot.... The gallery was quiet and respectful (Krispa and Jeff were not here). By 2:40 PM the sun was falling fast. We had to get back to civilization, stop at the dump, and go to mass, but not in that order. We'll be back in a few weeks to check on the ice and generally taunt Winter.

-Nemo
