New Year's Weekend

January 2nd & 3rd, 2003

Late Friday afternoon was warm for this time of year with a variety of precipitation types including, but not limited to, rain, sleet and snow.

We grabbed a ruler, an ice auger, and a rope (just in case the ice was not as thick as advertised and one of us needed rescuing) and headed out onto the ice to find the thickness of the frozen layer.

There is just short of a foot of very good ice. That is almost twice as much as the last few years at this point in winter.

The clouds and precip were gone by Saturday morning. It was a bit cooler (16°F) and 1 inch of new snow was on the ground. Marching around on the lake taking pictures made us really hungry...

The Log Cabin came to the rescue! Now before you think it I know that the Hotel Crandon also has great food and they really did a good job remodeling the dining room, but we were really hungry and the Log Cabin was about 52 seconds closer.

Also I had been thinking more and more about their "Delicious Corned Beef Hash" lately and had decided how to have the eggs prepared while walking off the ice (scrambled). At the last moment, I split a ham and cheese omelet and O'Brians with the Mrs.. While it was good I can't help but wonder what might have been...

Construction projects on the lake have slowed (stopped) as is normal during the cold season.

With the tasks we had planned finished, we left to attend a card party Saturday night.

Before leaving we went to the public boat landing to get some rare (well rare here anyway) pictures of the south end of the lake.

There were signs of ice fishermen around but we did not see any actual ice fishermen.

The sun was bright, but fast moving clouds were a warning of a strong cold front coming soon. The predicted temperatures of less than -15°F coupled with 2 Packer game tickets took the sting out of leaving.
